Dr. Duwelius graduated from Creighton University School of Medicine in 1982 and did his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Nebraska and a trauma fellowship at the University of California at Davis. He holds a position at Oregon Health Sciences University as an Adjunct Associate Professor of Orthopaedics and is Clinical Attending at Saint Vincent's Hospital and Medical Center in Portland, Oregon. He is Chairman of the Department of Orthopedics until 2011 and is Chairman of the Orthopedic Research Foundation at St Vincent Hospital. He concentrates his orthopaedic practice on adult fracture surgery of the lower extremity and total joint reconstruction of the hip and knee. Minimally invasive hip and knee surgery and clinical research in the areas of total joint arthroplasty and fractures of the lower extremity are the major emphasis of his surgical practice. Patient care, development of better total hip and knee clinical pathways to improve patient care and decrease the hospital stay are particular areas of interest and clinical research. Dr. Duwelius is Board Certified in Orthopaedic Surgery by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Subspecialty societies include the Adult Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons and the Orthopaedic Trauma Association. Dr. Duwelius was Chairman of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons Instructional Course Committee for 2007. Volunteer efforts include trips to the Dominican Republic for humanitarian relief efforts and educational efforts through a Jesuit organization called the Institute for Latin American Concern through Creighton University in Omaha Nebraska. Dr. Duwelius is an editor for the Journal of Arthroplasty. Dr. Duwelius is married and has three children. Recreational activities include sports activities with his family including fly fishing, upland bird hunting, cycling, and snow skiing.
